Canon makes IT entry at ECR 2014

By staff writers- March 10, 2014 -- VIENNA -Canon Europe made use of this week's ECR 2014 to make its entry into the healthcare informatics market, with the launch of PACS, RIS, and quality assurance software. Normally known for its digital radiography (DR) systems, Canon decided to make its entry into the IT space after acquiring Delft Diagnostic Imaging in 2012. The Delft business also included Rogan Delft, a developer of PACS software.

Canon has updated the Rogan Delft software and is now relaunching it under the Canon brand. In addition to PACS and RIS, the company's healthcare informatics suite includes Image Quality System (IQS), software for the analysis and classification of rejected images by radiographers. The suite also includes cross-document sharing using the XDS standard.

Canon is selling the software in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia; the firm has not yet decided to market it in North America, where Canon once sold PACS before pulling out of the market a number of years ago.

Canon also highlighted new developments in its core DR business. The company launched a new program called "DR in 2 minutes," in which it will perform a DR retrofit or upgrade in two minutes. The program is available for both radiography and fluoroscopy rooms and mobile units, and users can deploy any of three DR plate sizes.

Other highlights in the Canon booth included Trauma DR, a complete DR room for trauma applications; the CXDI-401C full-format wireless flat-panel detector; and a tomosynthesis feature being shown as a work-in-progress on the D2 RS remote-control system. The company hopes to begin shipping tomo this summer.
